Moon shaped beaches with soft sand, sporting waves for energetic surfers, choices of fresh catch to be BBQ-ed for dinner, Sri Lanka, with a rolling flat sea shore, offers an array of experiences for beach bums across the globe.
The island country is dotted with tiny localities along the sea-shore, easily connected with highways to drive down.
Following is a compilation of the best beaches from Sri Lanka with distinctive features.
Hikkaduwa
Literal translation of the name Hikkaduwa is Sinhalese refer to the sword of knowledge. Located at the southern most part of Sri Lanka, it boasts of the reputation of a great surfing pod. Add to that a coral sanctuary with multiple variety and colorful nightlife.
Hikkaduwa surely features in backpacker’s list while travelling in Sri Lanka. Do trust the tailor population of this small coastal town to sew you few custom made shirts with great craftsmanship. Wake up early to enjoy a walk through the sea shore, all by your own.
Unawatuna
Unawatuna finds an early reference from the Hindu epic Ramayana, detailing beauty of the place.
If you are heading towards Galle, it is a sin not to visit the coastal town, enriched with mangrove forest, coral reefs and pristine beaches. The Tsunami of 2004 has destroyed a significant part of the scenic beauty it harbored once. Add to that the curse of unbridled tourism practice.
Good news is government is taking cure these days to bring back the repute by enforcing sustainability. It is recommended to visit the Devalayas (temple) and feast there the sumptuous porridge made with rice and coconut milk.
Arugam Bay
Located at the south eastern part of the island, Arugam Bay takes pride in the constellation of beaches, lagoons, historic temples and the nearby Kumana National Park sprawling across area.
Excellent waves around the area have made Arugam Bay a surfer friendly destination.
Negombo
A major city with an international airport at the western mouth of the country, this coastal town boasts of business allies with western world from ancient times. A blend of Dutch and Portuguese colonial past has ushered Negombo with many interesting architectural bodies namely, forts and churches.
However, abundance of natural bliss can be found in the lagoon fed by multiple rivers and a backbone of local economy. Indulge in a canoe ride through the Muthurajawela Marsh tour that sails you through a scenic old school Dutch canal. The beach is dotted with ocean facing hotels, making it easy to find a soothing stay.
Uppuveli
If you are looking for a golden sand beach to stroll alone, look no further, arrive at Uppuveli. My favorite of all the Sri Lankan beaches, the place has a distinct local charm to it.
It is a visual treat, tucked away from the maddening crowd of other popular beaches of the vicinity, a perfect place to sit back and relax in my opinion. Shacks with food and beer, the palm tree enclosed areas, offer plenty of delicacies for the wary traveler.
If you are a soul seeking adventurist or a lover of verdant nature, Sri Lanka offers great vibes from all the beaches. Least to say about the delicious treats of sea food offered there.
Have you been to the beaches of the island country? Do you have a story to share? I would love to hear about your experiences. Please take some time off to scribble down your though in the comment section.
